Acid rain

Juan Tuno is still worried about chlorine, but he has concerns about acid rain, too. Read Juan's Statement on acid rain below.

Juan Tuno Acid Rain

I'm worried that acid rain may be killing the fish in the area. I've collected rain from near each of the three rivers. I've also collected samples to test from the Fo River, Missterssippi River, Rafta River, James Pond, Lake Adaysicle, and Gray Bay. If they're a little bit acidic, then that's normal, but if they're too acidic, it would kill the fish and other water life. I also know

that rain water seeps through the soils on its way into these lakes and streams, so I also want to test water that seeps through the soils.

Juan was recently interviewed by the Synchrony City Chronicle about acid rain and its effects on the environment. Read the interview below and answer the questions.

First you are going to investigate to determine if acid rain may be making the Gray Area rivers and lakes too acidic for fish. You are going to test 8 water samples from different locations throughout the Gray Area. If you need an extra copy of the data sheet, you may download it by clicking on the file.

Interview

Read the statements of two suspects. LaToya Faktorie , owner of the toy factory on the Missterssippi River, and Don Juan Tuno, owner of the oil refinery.

LaToya Faktorie  - Acid Rain Statement

I understand that you discovered that there is an acid rain

problem in the area. Your tests also proved that there's no acid

rain problem in the Missterssippi River, which proves that it's not

our fault. We received an award three years ago for our efforts to

clean up the waste that we put in the river. The cars are causing

the acid rain, and that's not our fault. That's the fault of everyone

who drives or rides in cars.

Don Juan Tuno - Acid Rain Statement

We release sulfur oxides into the air, but we do it to make

products that you buy and use. If you choose to close down oil

refineries, then you might as well give up cars, jet skis, natural

gas, fertilizers, wax, chewing gum, perfumes, cloth, plastics,

asphalt, and a whole lot of other stuff. As long as you keep

using these products, you'll need us around.

Continue the acid rain research. Use the results of your acid rain tests, and read the acid rain files. Be prepared to discuss what you know.
