These are some of the questions that you can use to guide your background research. Add others that you feel you need answered.

 

Your textbook has all of his information, you may also do some research online.  Just make sure you give yourself enough time to complete the case studies (i.e this background research should not take more than 4 days).

4. What is a soil profile?  (AKA - What is a soil horizon?)

 

5. What are the different types of soil?

 

6. What is the value of soil?

 

7. How can soil be lost? (include wind, water and coastal erosion)

 

8. How can soil loss be prevented?

 

9. What/who keeps soil alive? In order to answer this question, visit Soil Safari (if it is not working, you can access the same information by clicking here). There are seven major types of critters that live in solil. For each one, write down their food source and their contribution to soil.
