STEM and the EDP

Create a document where you keep track of all your work. You will need this information for your final presentation.

Science:

Gain a better understanding of the location and natural disaster your team is working to address. Determine its causes, and how it affects/has affected the people of the region. How does it form and why does it happen there specifically are key points you must address.

Provide summaries  of what you learned and include the links to the information.

Technology:

Gain a better understanding of disaster proof housing alternatives for specific natural disaster your team is working to address, paying close attention to local building materials and considering the traditional housing design for your region.

Provide summaries  of what you learned and include the links to the information.

Engineering:

  • The Problem:

Define the Problem; include the target audience (Who are you building this for?) and why it is important to solve the problem.

Identify the Criteria: What conditions must be met to solve the problem?

Identify the Constraints:  What conditions might limit a solution (cost, availability of materials, location, size, etc.)?

  • Design a solution.

Brainstorm possible solutions and try things out. Make a plan for your build; have a reason for everything that you do.

Draw out your solution as a detailed sketch, including dimensions and scale (where appropriate).

  • Prepare to build your prototype.

Make a list of the materials you need to build your prototype. Create a table that specifically states the "original" material needed, its cost, AND what you will use to represent it in your model.

  • Prototype

Build your prototype! As you are building, take pictures of what you are doing.

Prepare a written description of the steps you take to build your prototype. (This is where your pictures come in handy!).

Furnishings: For this build, you will also create the furnishings that will go inside your house. Add the sketches to your building plans (to scale), and use the sketches to craft your furnishings. Your clients will want to see area rugs, couches, tables, chairs, beds, etc. Consider how these furnishings will help enhance the quality of living of the people who will eventually live in your house as it survives its natural disaster.

DO NOT START ON THIS UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO!

Math Connection - Evidence of testing:

How will you test your prototype? Explain the procedure fully, even if you are given directions on how to perform the test.

Include all data you took; prepare graphs and charts.

Based on the data (evidence), write a conclusion indicating whether your prototype worked for its intended purpose.
