Empathy for the sky

How can we encourage people to address the problem of light pollution if they do not know what they are missing?

Let's start by informing the public through the "Adopt a Constellation" fundraiser.

Create a visually appealing and informative product that encourages people to pledge their support for a specific constellation. Your finished product must include:

  • The name of your constellation, as well as the nickname.

  • Diagram or model of your constellation: Label the major stars and provide lines to show the “shape” and/or outline of the constellation.

  • Where do we find it in the night sky (Time of year, latitudes, position).

  • Mythology/history associated with your constellation.

  • For each of the major/named stars in your constellation, include the following information:

    • Name

    • Type of star

    • Distance from Earth

    • Magnitude

    • Color and surface temperature

  • Fascinating facts (at least 3) that would encourage your audience to pledge their support for you constellation.

Our goal is to have as many constellations as possible represented, which means that they will be assigned in a first come-first pick manner:

Once your assignment has been approved, you and your partner can get to work. There are many sites where you can find information, just be careful about keeping accurate records of any site you visit, and use the CITE-IT rubric to evaluate the accuracy of the information you find.
