Chemistry all around you

Purpose:  To research a commercial product that you currently using or are interested in using to examine what it is made of and its potential hazards. We consume food and products and often do not know the effect of those products on our bodies or the environment.  This project will help make you and your classmates become more educated consumers.

Step 1: Choose a product that you would like to research it can be a food (example: sports drink), household cleaning (example: floor cleaner), beauty product (example: lip gloss), personal hygiene (example: deodorant), or health product (example: energy boosts/vitamins). You must choose a different product than your classmates.

Step 2: Research your product by looking at the ingredients on the label AND look for the website of the company that makes it.  You must research at least three (3) ingredients in the product.  Your research must include what it is made from or derived from, its health effects, its chemical formula and chemical name, physical and chemical properties of the ingredient, and the purpose of including that ingredient in the product. A good way to go about this is to type the name of the ingredient followed by the words chemical data sheet.

As you do your research, make sure you use you keep track of your sources. Your teacher will be checking that you have at least three reliable resources of information.

Step 3: Create an infographic with the information you found. Your infographic must include:

- Picture of the product you chose.

Three ingredients, each with:

  • Chemical name of the ingredient.

  • Chemical formula of the ingredient if it is an organic molecule, you must also include a picture of the structure)

  • Health effects of the ingredient.

  • How it is made and/or what it is derived from in nature.

  • Physical and chemical properties of the substance (at least three properties).

  • Purpose of including the ingredient in the product.

  • A conclusion where you express whether you consider the product safe/unsafe and your recommendation for its widespread use.
