Mars Colony Project
How can we colonize Mars in a sustainable way?
You are working on one of the teams involved in the colonization of Mars. Before we commit to funding such an endeavor, we need you to provide us with compelling evidence that this is even possible. You will be taking different roles throughout the project, culminating in one cohesive final product that demonstrates your knowledge in all content areas.
Scientists
Your final product must include well throught out answers to the following:
-
Compare and contrast the following environmental phenomena for Mars and Earth: temperature, atmospheric pressure, composition of the atmosphere, water, soil
-
What are the requirements for humans to survive in a sustainable way? Consider not only how to transport them from Earth, but the infrastructure needed to maintain them.
Mathematicians
Your final product must include well throught out answers to the following:
-
How much space will a Mars colony need? You may start out with just 1,000 people, but be ready to scale it up to 10,000,000.
-
You will be building a 3D model to scale. Any activity that requires space must be calculated and represented accurately.
Social Scientists
Your final product must include well throught out answers to the following:
-
What type of government would you recommend? Defend your choice.
-
Who should be the first colonists and why? How many should there be?
-
What hardships will the first space colonists on Mars have to endure?
-
How will this colonization attempt be different from the colonizations on Earth (America, India, Africa, etc.) and what lessons should be remembered from them
-
How will Earthlings benefit from the colonization of Mars?
