Narrow it down

At the Stun Conference, you probably figured out that the issue you chose is too complex to solve in one fell swoop. However, there are steps you can take and ideas you can implement. Perhaps you want to help with clean water and sanitation by developing a water filtration system, develop a MOOC to provide access to education or even take existing clean energy technology and implement a plan to reduce emissions in our community.

Gather a team and brainstorm possible ideas to address your chosen goal.

Choose one idea to develop, and research the problem in depth. Develop a list of questions to answer in your research:

  • What is the science behind the problem?

  • What technology has been developed/or is needed to address the problem?

  • How did society influence the development of the problem?

Use the Engineering Design Process to answer the question:

"What can I do/come up with to help meet my Global Goal?"

Narrow your focus to one actionable item.

Project Brief

Present: A detailed overview of the technology currently in use to solve your issue (and that you will innovate). This includes the scientific principles involved in its functioning. It also needs to explain one limitation or problem of this current technology that you and your team will solve.

Past: A detailed history of the technology. They do not want a history since the beginning of time, but they do want to be able to track how it came to be, so that previous mistakes and limitations can be identified.

Future: Complete, detailed explanation of the new technology you are proposing.  Since this is where they will potentially invest, you must include the scientific principles involved in developing the technology. This means you must know what it looks like (detailed sketch, prototype or working model) and how it works. If applicable, you also must have a plan to test the new technology.

Liability: Your application must also include the possible consequences (positive and negative) of your technology or innovation.

Product Website: Create a 5 tab website that promotes your future technology by describing its attributes, liabilities and of course includes the images of your product. You will use this website to present your product.

ACTION

Identify one piece of technology that you would like to explore further. Remember your objective is to track the development of the technology and imagine its future.

Once you have identified the technology you want to innovate:

Present:

  • Write a detailed overview of the technology.

  • Include the scientific principles involved in its functioning.

  • Explain one limitation or problem of this current technology that you and your team will solve.

Past

  • Research and write about the history of your chosen technology.
