Classroom Procedures
A procedure is an established or official way of doing something. Procedures are in place so that we can all work together efficiently.
Entering the Classroom
I will usually be waiting outside the classroom for you. If for some reason my door is closed, I expect you to like up behind the doormat in order to allow me to open the door and give any student that may have been in the classroom with me enough room to exit before you come in. As you enter the classroom proceed to your seat quickly and quietly. Once you reach your seat, take out your notebook, pen/pencil and be ready to begin the lesson. You should be in your seat, ready to start by the time the beginning of class bell rings. If you are out of your seat when the bell rings, you are considered tardy (even if you are sharpening your pencil or obtaining a tissue). Tardies are cumulative and subject to consequences per the Herman handbook.
Instructional time
I expect you to listen to instruction attentively. You show that you are being attentive by "SLANT"ing.
Sit up straight
Listen carefully
Ask and Answer questions - wait your turn to speak
Note key information
Track the Teacher
If you are working with technology and I need to address the class, I will ask that you place your screens to "listening height". This means that you should take your hands off the keyboard, lower your screens, and SLANT.
Disruptive behavior during instructional time impacts the learning of the whole class. Be respectful of our time together.
Group Work/Project Work
Group work is the cornerstone of your experience in my class. During group work, your teacher and classmates expect you to:
-
Work with your own group. Disturbing other groups/getting out of your seat to visit another group carries consequences, such as having to complete an individual assignment or reflection about your behavior.
-
Keep your volume at a quiet conversation level.
-
Assist your team with all tasks. "That is not my part" is never an acceptable response.
-
Stay on task. It is very easy to lose track of time or start a conversation about something else. If you notice yourself or any member of your team straying off task, remind yourself and/or your team member that due dates are firm, and that all work must be completed on time.
To facilitate group work, AdVENTURE has its own team roles. Know your role and your responsibilities:
Press Secretary - Acts as a liaison between the teacher and team and is responsible for turning in work for the group.
Resource Specialist - Gets the necessary supplies for the team; picks up hand-out(s); makes sure the team cleans up its area at the end of the period.
Group Manager - Reads the directions or prompts; makes sure everyone knows what to do.
Analyst - Shares the documents and information with the group; takes notes and summarizes team discussions; doesn't mean he/she is the only one that writes information.
Turning in work or papers you want me to see
All electronic assignments are turned in to Google Classroom. In order for your work to be considered on time for grading purposes, it is your responsibility to verify that the links to your work are correct, that "sharing" permissions have been adjusted so that I can view and comment on your work ("anyone with the link can comment" or shared with mgarcia@oakgrovesd.net granting can comment privileges). Most importantly, make sure you submit to the correct assignment.
Paper based responses, forms, permission slips, etc. are to be placed in my "Pink Bin". If it was not placed in the pink bin it does not exist, even if you handed your paper to me.
Exiting the classroom

The "ten-minute bell" is a warning to me that class is about to be over, NOT your cue to put your materials away. Keep working until I instruct you to put your materials away and get ready to exit. When I give you the instruction to clean up and get ready to exit, it is your job to quietly and in an orderly fashion put away any materials that you used. This includes capping all markers/glue sticks, unplugging and winding the cords of hot glue guns, returning and plugging in your computer, returning everything to its rightful place, and picking up/placing in the trash any garbage you may have generated. Once all materials have been returned, go back to your seat and wait to be dismissed. Even if the bell to exit has rung, you may not leave the classroom until I am satisfied that you are leaving the classroom "how you found it".
Any personal item left in the classroom becomes my property, to dispose of how I see fit.
